Design Trends | Spring 2015
Aficionados. Fanatics. Devotees.
These are the words that could be used to describe our all-consuming love for all things stationery, stunning, and designer. From the expressive movement of typefaces to the nuanced sheen of gold foil, we simply can’t get enough. So today we are here to share with you some of our favorite spring trends and to hear what trends you are loving right now! So let’s jump right in, shall we?
Photo-based + Statement Text
Personalizing cards with photos is far from a new concept, but the stylistic concept of designs based entirely on photos and simple, statement text is one that has taken on a new, vibrant life in recent years. These photo-based designs are appealing for so many reasons, but we love them particularly because of the complete element of personalization. Even with the same design, no two will ever look the same.
Vintage Ephemera
“Vintage” can be, and is, used to describe a lot of eras of design and thus leads to a “vintage” trend resurfacing in varying ways every couple of years. Most commonly vintage refers to the 1920s through 1950s, which leaves a lot of room for variation in style. From dapper decorations, sophisticated silhouettes and flourishing florals, all sorts of vintage elements can be incorporated to create personalized and beautiful designs.
Geodes + Mineral-based
The appeal of geology and mineral-based art comes from the fluid, dynamic nature of the muse itself. The colors, patterns, and textures present in geodes and crystals varies so dramatically from one to the next, and even a subtle nuance of reflecting light or added mineral shimmer can transform a design. This allows for a wide range of designs to suit varying styles, with differing levels of subtlety and brilliance. Some pieces may exude luxury with the shimmering and vibrant gradations of marbled granite, while others may feel more modern by mirroring the symmetry of quartz crystals.
Handlettering
Typography, at it’s simplest form, is merely an arrangement of letters, but in design can take hundreds of forms to convey a mood, theme, and message. Through typography a designer is able to give a composition balance and style, making typography one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s toolbox. Hand-lettering is well-loved for the freedom and flourish that it offers. From bold retro box letters to sweeping, swirling cursive, hand-drawn lettering allows for the ultimate in expression. Additionally, as you can see here, statement-making hand-lettering creates the perfect accompaniment to so many different styles, from classic stripes to ethereal watercolor and everything in between.
