What to Feature in Your Wedding Save the Date Template

Not sure what to include as part of your save the date card template? Consider these essential details when designing and customizing your wedding save the date cards.

Request to Save the Date

Most save the date cards or notes start off with a greeting that sets out exactly why you’re sending it — to request that the recipient saves the date for your special day. While most designs make this obvious, it’s still a good idea to include a few words so there’s no confusion.

It’s most common to write it out as “save the date” or “please save our date.” You could also opt for something like “please mark your calendar” or “hold the date.” Choose whichever wording suits you best as a couple, as well as being mindful of the formality of your celebration.

The Happy Couple’s Details

It probably goes without saying, but we’ll mention it anyway: Be sure to include both of your names on your save the date template.

Most couples list their first name and surname here, in whichever order they prefer. For a more casual vibe or an intimate micro wedding, you could simply use your first names. If you’re inviting distant relatives or people you haven’t seen in a while, including your full names is helpful for guests so they can make sure they spell your names correctly in their wedding cards.

Proposed Wedding Date

It’s not a save the date without a date to save! List your proposed wedding date prominently so your guests can’t miss it.

The format you choose for your date is entirely up to you. You could opt for numerals, the full date written out, or something in between.

If you’re welcoming international guests who use a different date format, writing the date out in full can help avoid any confusion over which day and month your big day takes place on. For example, Saturday, July 9th is nice and simple to understand — whereas writing 7.9.22 could be confusing for any guests who are arriving from abroad.

Wedding Location

While some couples may already have a venue booked by the time they create a save the date template, you might not have a specific wedding location yet. It’s perfectly fine to only include the city, state, or area where the wedding will take place.

Sharing the proposed wedding location on your save the dates can be a big help for out-of-town loved ones on your guest list, or if you’re hosting a destination wedding. This gives invitees plenty of time to get organized, book hotels, and arrange transport for your wedding day before your official wedding invitations come out.

Optional Links

With your names, the date, and location of your wedding listed, you have all the basics covered. You can also feature a link on your digital design for more information — especially if you’re planning a big bash, something unusual, or if the event is happening soon.

One of the most popular things to include on a save the date is a link to your wedding website. This is a great place to store updates and key details about your wedding, so your guests can bookmark it and check in over time. If you’re sharing your wedding planning journey on social media or a blog, you could also feature a link to this here so your loved ones can follow along.
