2 sip and see invitations, a pair of baby shoes, and a pacifier

Your little bundle of joy is here, and everyone’s excited to meet the new addition! To save from having multiple visitors over a long period of time, why not host a sip and see so everyone can meet the new baby at once?

In this guide, we’ll introduce what a sip and see is, give our top tips for hosting, and share some of our most-loved sip and see invitations.

What Is a Sip and See?

A sip and see party is a way for your loved ones to meet your gorgeous new baby (or babies) in the comfort of your own home. Parents or carers can host an open-house-style event where friends and family members can drop in, meet the baby, and spend some time chatting with the parent(s).

If you didn’t already reveal the baby’s name or gender in your birth announcement, this meet-and-greet event might also be a chance to do a name and gender reveal in person to your loved ones.

Tips for Hosting a Sip and See

If you’re considering a sip and see event, there are a few things to consider. They’re slightly different from a traditional baby shower or welcome baby party, so here’s what to think of as you’re planning it.

1. Choose the Right Time

While guests are excited to meet the new baby boy or baby girl, those first few days and weeks can be challenging for everyone involved. Give yourself and the baby (or babies) plenty of time to settle in, establish routines, and get comfortable.

We recommend choosing a date a few weeks or even a few months after the birth or adoption date. This isn’t a hard rule though. You can host the event whenever you feel ready, or whenever the parent(s) are ready if you’re hosting on their behalf.

2. Keep It Short and Sweet

You could spend hours watching a newborn and admiring a new bundle of joy, but sip and see events are usually kept short to make them as comfortable as possible for the parent(s) and baby.

Plan for your event to last no more than two hours. It’s long enough to give everyone a chance to be introduced to the little one without it being overwhelming, but not so long that it’s overly tiring for the host(s) to manage.

3. Set Boundaries

It seems like almost everyone has their own views when it comes to newborns, and a loved one’s views might clash with yours. For this reason it’s important to establish clear boundaries — especially around holding, kissing, or carrying your newborn.

Use your invitation wording to let your guests know what your wishes are in terms of hygiene and protecting your baby from potential illnesses. Explain how long the party will last, and say whether you require guests to RSVP or if they can simply show up on the day.

4. Offer Light Refreshments

With a sip and see being such a short event and the focus being on the parent(s) and baby, there’s no need to provide a full array of food and drink for your guests to enjoy. Instead, offer some light refreshments that guests can help themselves to.

Provide the option of having tea, coffee, or another hot drink on arrival. Set up a buffet station where guests can find savory snacks and sweet treats, with nothing that requires too much attention from the host(s). Some of these baby shower appetizers are ideal.

5. Choose a Theme

A sip and see is a magical opportunity for your closest friends and family members to meet your new arrival. It’s also a great reason to host a themed celebration if that’s what you’re all about.

Choose an adorable baby shower theme for your baby sip and see — like baby animals, stars, bears, or rainbows. You could also opt for a more grown-up vibe, like a boho party theme, a vintage tea party, or a retro-inspired event. Whichever theme you choose, Greenvelope has plenty of stunning invitation designs to choose from.
